PRETTY GOOD for the price, could use fine tuning.

After reading all of the reviews on amazon, the web, ebay, etc. and my previous experience with coleman tents, this is my opinion and notes about the coleman evanston 4 screened tent. The first thing I would like to clear the air about and voice what I know to be accurate and true, is that when a tent states: "4 person tent, 8 person tent" it means that the tent will sleep that many people; not that they will have room to move, boogie woogie, and bring their entire house with them. 4 person means that 4 bodies will fit on the floor surface. Now that I said that, I'm ready to describe my experience with the tent... so far. Once the tent arrived, brand new, I staked the 4 corners and quickly assembled the structure in a matter of 4-7 minutes. 2 long black poles for the frame, 1 thick short black pole for roof support, and 1 grey pole for the screened porch. The poles are fiberglass, which if you intended to backpack with this tent, you would be carrying a lot more weight that could have been reduced by coleman, but the alternative aluminum poles are more costly, and I can see why, for the price, fiberglass was the material of choice. Although, I do not like fact that coleman claims this tent to be backpacking worthy, when in all actuality, it is not. The color is an off, burnt orange, and an off white, with the famous coleman lantern emblem on the right side of the rainfly. Speaking of the rainfly, it was very simple to adhere/fasten to the main structure with its bungee clips and guylines. There are only four guylines which I consider to be a little too long for my taste, so what I end up doing is tying a figure eight on a bite about halfway down the line to minimize the risk of damage or tripping. And the tent stakes that come with this tent are just fine and work great if you use them properly. However, the downside is that coleman did not include any extras, so if you lose one, you'll have to find an alternative or sacrifice a stake already in use. So once the tent was completely set up and ready for use, I made sure to give a careful and detailed inspection for any factory defects, punctures, broken zippers, seams not fully sewed, etc... I found my tent to be perfect from any and all defects, except for one concern that was on the floor of the screened porch. On both sides, near the main part of the tent, there are openings that are about 4-6 inch-long slits, for which I can see that would possibly only serve one purpose (electricity access), but I find that to be more of a nuicance than a luxury. The reason being, bugs and small wildlife are curious instinctively, and if you venture away from your tent, or are asleep, it's very likely something could very well find its way in... hypothetically speaking of course. In any event, my course of action was to buy some velcro that had an adheisive backside, and adhere those to each side of the slit, and now I am in control of both of those openings, and that will also prevent anything from trying to sneak inside the tent. Otherwise, I was overall happy about the tent. Besides that one trouble area, I don't really hear of too many problems, and the ones I do read about, from how the owners told what they did and what happened, makes me think that it's user error, not product error. In any event, next on the agenda was to inflate the mattresses and bring in the beds for the dogs. My wife and I use two twin mattresses (one for each of us), and the dogs have two large round beds, as one is 74lbs, and the other is about 40lbs. the tent accommodated our two mattresses with about 3 feet to spare on one side, and no feet to spare lengthwise. I put both dog beds on either side of the screened porch, and had plenty of room to walk in and out of the tent without getting their beds in my path. Do note, my camping experience thus far was on a night that was not rainy or even had a chance of rain. If it would have happened to rain, both dog beds would have to come inside the main tent, which I did experiment with, and area to do anything becomes nonexistent, but I accept that fact, as I mainly use my tent to sleep, rest, or get changed in, and not to hangout and party my whole weekend inside of one. I can easily see though, that if you backpack and sleep on sleeping bags, this tent accommodates 4 people easily with room to spare. As far as our stuff, we each bring a backpack and a dry box. I find that keeping your backpack on the porch if it's nice out is perfect for while you sleep, and if it rains, just pull it inside. I forgot to mention, on a normal camping trip, we only bring one dog bed, and that gives us room for our backpacks and dry box. We slept with the rainfly on, the main tent door unzipped while the screened canopy was zipped, both windows unzipped, and found the tent to have more than sufficient airflow to keep you cool on hot nights. No problems, no bugs. What little wind we had, the tent didn't even rattle. When morning came, I always dread the teardown and repacking of everything, but this 4 person tent wasn't that bad. I put all the stakes back, all the tentpoles back, and folded the screened porch first, than folded the tent in half lengthwise, and in half lengthwise again. It fit back into the bag perfectly, and had room to spare for the poles and stakes. In conlusion, I think this tent is pretty good for what you pay, the size is just right, and I like the style and functionality of everything. Downsides are the slits on the floor of the screen porch, and extra long guylines.

great camping tent!!!!! stayed dry

My husband and I went camping for 5 days last week, and all the days were raining, a lot of raining, one day in special rained more than 3 hours consecutives and I can say that we were the only ones on the camping ground that stayed dry. And all because of our nice Coleman Evanston Tent, this tent is awesome, has a nice color, nice size, we used a Queen Coleman mattress and we had more than enough space to our fan, our clothes and shoes, etc. it was nicely cool inside the tent. Something else I have to mention is that the porch is more than awesome, it has a lot of space, it has enough space for two chairs inside.That is why I have to give this tent 5 stars!!!!

i bought this tent for $47 at costco last fri and overall im very pleased with it other than a few minor things. i love the screen "porch" and the fact that it has a floor in it. we camp with 2 dogs and and the porch floor kept out most of the dirt and debri from us and the dogs. the size is decent. we fit a full size mattress with a porta potty and still had room for a duffel bag and 2 60lb dogs. though it was a bit of a tight fit but definitely not a bad experience. now for the summer this is a great tent. especially if you like to sleep without the rainfly and see the sky and trees above you. the entire tent from about 2feet off the ground is screen except for 2 small triangle windows on either side. so i would not use this tent in weather weather where it was to cold for you to sleep outside because im sure the wind and cold gets in easily even with the rainfly on. the only other thing i dont like is that it has what i guess are access areas for electrical cords where the screen porch and tent join. i wish they could close though since they are always open. i wanted to leave the the tent door open and just have the porch door closed to give a little more room for my dogs but i didnt want to risk mosquitoes or small animals coming in. it looks like i will have to find a way to seal them. also the fact that there is so much screen it made folding it up and getting it into the bag much easier than other tents i have owned.a few other things i should mention. i have only set it up once but it was very easy. took me about 10-15 min but next time im betting it will take less than half the time. also the porch is very small. 1 or maybe 2 folding camp chairs fit inside of it and would protect you from bugs and maybe a slight drizzle. but any rain harder than that and you will get wet, along with whatever is inside of the porch. there is a screen strip running the width of it though to provide drainage. it also has 2 small hanging pouches on the walls and a plastic loop on the ceiling. also i zipped and unzipped the tent probably 50 times and not once did it snag on any material. both doors worked flawlessly.so if this tent had a way to close this opening i would give it 5 stars for a summer/warm weather tent. but because of that i had to knock a star off.
